چکیده
Abstract Invasive alien plants (IAPs) are a significant threat to the biodiversity and ecological functioning of sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEIs); however, weed biological control has not yet been implemented as management tool. The PEIs have had 23 recorded, which several considered beyond eradication therefore could benefit from release safe effective biocontrol agents. We used South African Biological Control Target Selection (BCTS) system provide ranked list target species in order priority for further research. highest-scoring species, those that should be first targeted, were Sagina procumbens Cerastium fontanum . No agents IAPs released any climate with consistent low temperatures PEIs, so climatic compatibility will essential prior decision release. However, very few native present on programmes would involve limited host specificity testing, improve feasibility speed new developed. Biocontrol may offer an environmentally sustainable method reducing negative impacts these thus warrants investigation.

This paper provides a brief review of the environmental and economic costs of invasive alien plants in South Africa as a background to assessments of returns on investment in weed biological control. The understanding of impacts and their economic costs is far from perfect, but estimates indicate that some costs (of lost water, grazing and biodiversity) are currently about R6.5 billion per annu...
متن کاملMajor advance of South Georgia glaciers during the Antarctic Cold Reversal following extensive sub-Antarctic glaciation
The history of glaciations on Southern Hemisphere sub-polar islands is unclear. Debate surrounds the extent and timing of the last glacial advance and termination on sub-Antarctic South Georgia in particular. Here, using sea-floor geophysical data and marine sediment cores, we resolve the record of glaciation offshore of South Georgia through the transition from the Last Glacial Maximum to Holo...
متن کاملAntarctic deglacial pattern in a 30 kyr record of sea surface temperature offshore South Australia
[1] Comparison of ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica shows an asynchronous two-step warming at these high latitudes during the Last Termination. However, the question whether this asynchrony extends to lower latitudes is unclear mainly due to the scarcity of paleorecords from the Southern Hemisphere. New data from a marine core collected off South Australia ( 36 S) allows a detailed recons...
متن کاملALIEN PLANT CONTROL STRATEGIES IN Hawai`i VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK*
Alien plants have greatly altered some native plant communities and threaten others in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. The Park contains approximately 405 alien and 375 native vascular plant species. Desultory efforts were made to control alien plants until the 1980s, at which time a systematic program was initiated. The following strategies or actions have been taken to protect native species...
